Attitude:
"A set of thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and behaviors toward a particular object, person, thing, or event that can have a powerful influence over behavior. "
The first step to being a positive leader, and we all are leaders, is to have a positive attitude. Have you ever heard of those ten two-letter words that make all the difference?
If you had to evaluate your overall attitude, where would you fall on a scale of 0-10? Is your attitude affected by whom you are in the presence of or what the weather is today? Is your glass half empty or half full? Pause here for a moment to give that some thought.
A positive attitude is always a choice. No one makes us angry - we choose to be angry. A leader would never wait for someone else to motivate them. A leader realizes the importance of positive thoughts to have a positive attitude.
No worries if you struggle with attitude; we all do at times. Just remember, YOU can change this because YOU choose your attitude.
It all begins with putting positive thoughts into our brains. Think of your mind like a garden. Are you planting dandelions and expecting roses to bloom? What you put in is what you get out. And words matter too. Not just how you speak to others but, more importantly, how you speak to yourself. The person you talk to the most is YOU, and what you say matters. Words paint pictures in your mind. Positive vocabulary equals positive outcomes. Focus on the positive, not the negative, to build success.
People who follow can only ascend to the height of the leader. Your followers are simply a reflection of your leadership. A leader cannot have a poor attitude and, at the same time, expect the people who follow to be positive. A positive attitude drives action.
Welcome the words of Charles Swindoll:
"The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past than education, than money than circumstances, than failures than successes than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, and a home.
The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past. We cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it."
And so it is with you. We are in charge of our attitudes. Want to change your perception of the world? Start with your attitude. Simply put, attitude is everything.
